To begin with, Roberto Mancini has agreed to become Azzuri’s head coach for a second spell.
His appointment follows a sudden change in direction by the federation after alternative plans collapsed.
As of Monday, Andrea Pirlo had been expected to take over but withdrew from contention amid concerns regarding his association with a Russian betting company. This development forced the federation to act swiftly, turning back to Mancini as a proven and familiar option.
Mancini, 61, previously managed Italy from 2018 to 2023, leading the nation to triumph at UEFA Euro 2020. His tenure restored Italy’s identity and brought silverware before he stepped down in August 2023.Shortly after, he took charge of the Saudi Arabia national team.
His time with Saudi Arabia lasted just over a year. A difficult run during the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign led to his departure, now paving the way for a return to familiar territory with Italy.
Claudio Ranieri Appointed Technical Director
Claudio Ranieri left his role as senior advisor at AS Roma following disputes with Gian Piero Gasperini.
On the other hand, Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as technical director .
This decision follows the abrupt exit of Paolo Maldini, who left the role after just 16 days .
Before this appointment, Ranieri served as senior advisor at AS Roma. He stepped down in April 2026 following a fallout and public disagreement with manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
