The former Italy international backs out from becoming Azzuri's new manger following criticisms surrounding his ambassadorial role with Russian betting company.

Andrea Pirlo’s anticipated appointment as head coach of the Italy national team has been officially called off.

The development comes after controversy surrounding his ambassadorial role with a Russian betting company, abruptly halting what seemed like a straightforward managerial transition for the former Italian international.

Pirlo, who is currently managing United FC in Dubai, had emerged as the frontrunner to replace Gennaro Gattuso. His candidacy gained further momentum after Pep Guardiola declined the opportunity to take over the role. This positioned Pirlo as the preferred choice for the Italian Football Federation, given his pedigree both as a player and a coach.

Controversial Ambassadorial Role

According to reports, Pirlo had signed an ambassadorial agreement in October 2025 with Russian betting company Fonbet. This commercial involvement quickly became a major stumbling block.

His association with the company drew criticism from officials within the Italian Football Federation as well as political figures, largely due to sensitivities surrounding the ongoing war in Ukraine.

As a result, the federation’s president, Giovanni Malagò, ultimately withheld approval for Pirlo’s appointment, effectively terminating the process.

Pirlo’s Personal Statement

Following the fallout, the former Italy international confirmed he was no longer in contention and addressed the situation publicly via Instagram.

He stated:

“After learning last night that I am no longer the candidate to lead the Italian national team, I believe it is my duty to clarify a few points.

In the last few days I have witnessed with great bitterness the debate that has developed around my name and the possibility of taking over the role of head coach of the Italian national team.

During my career, first as a football player and now as a coach, I have always carried out my activity in full respect to the laws of the countries I worked in and the contracts I signed.

To attribute a political meaning to such a collaboration means to attribute convictions that I have never expressed and that do not belong to me.”

His remarks underline his frustration at the situation and his insistence that his professional dealings should not be interpreted politically.

Before transitioning into management, the 47 year old enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a midfielder. He was a key member of Italy’s squad that won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where they defeated France in the final in Berlin to secure their fourth world title.

His footballing intelligence, vision, and composure made him one of the most respected midfielders of his generation, further enhancing his credibility as a potential national team coach.
