Vincent Kompany Hospitalised After Collapsing at Bayern Munich Training Ground

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground on Friday, prompting concern over the Belgian manager’s health ahead of the Bavarian side’s upcoming Bundesliga fixture.

The 40-year-old reportedly collapsed while watching a training session involving Bayern’s second team. The German champions have confirmed that Kompany is receiving medical attention and will undergo further examinations to establish the cause of the incident.

In an official statement, Bayern Munich said:

“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern’s amateurs.

“The first-team coach had been watching the second team’s session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”

The club has not disclosed further medical details, with Kompany remaining under medical supervision while doctors carry out the necessary examinations.

Bayern Munich Prioritise Kompany’s Recovery

Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, has expressed the club’s full support for the manager, stressing that his health remains the immediate priority.

Eberl said:

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery.

“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

The incident follows reports that Kompany had recently been suffering from a viral infection that affected his legs. The illness reportedly prevented him from attending some of Bayern’s pre-match preparations ahead of their midweek UEFA Champions League encounter against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.

However, the Belgian was well enough to take his place in the dugout for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

It remains unclear whether Friday’s incident is directly connected to his reported illness. Further medical assessments are expected to provide greater clarity.

Manchester City Send Message of Support

Kompany’s former club, Manchester City, have also sent their best wishes to the Belgian following the news.

The Premier League club posted the following message on its official X account:

“Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and club legend, Vincent Kompany.

“Get well soon, Vinny.”

Kompany remains a celebrated figure at the Etihad Stadium, having captained Manchester City during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history before moving into management.

Bundesliga Fixture in Doubt?

Kompany officially joined Bayern Munich on July 1, 2024, after being appointed head coach following his departure from Burnley. He initially signed a three-year contract before subsequently extending his agreement until June 30, 2029.

The former Belgium international has since taken charge of the German champions as they continue competing across domestic and European competitions.

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but Kompany’s availability for the fixture remains uncertain following his hospitalisation. His coaching staff will oversee training and match preparations in the meantime.

For now, Bayern’s priority is ensuring that their manager receives the appropriate medical attention and sufficient time to recover. Further updates on his condition and potential return to the touchline are expected when the club has more information to share.
