‎Senegal parts ways with AFCON-winning coach Pape Thiaw following a disappointing World Cup campaign, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure as head coach of the national team.‎‎

Senegal’s early exit at the World Cup played a major role in the decision by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).‎‎

Despite qualifying for the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams—highlighted by a five-goal win over Iraq after losses to France and Norway—Thiaw’s side suffered a dramatic collapse in the round of 32 against Belgium. Leading 2-0 in the 86th minute, Senegal conceded two late goals and eventually lost via a penalty in extra time.

Reports also suggest underlying contractual tensions may have contributed, as Thiaw had been involved in disputes with the FSF regarding his contract situation. It was reported that the 45 year old had worked while out of contract for months, with the FSF failing to offer a deal. He only recently signed a two-year contract a short while before the World Cup in the U.S.

‎‎In an official statement, the FSF said:

“After a thorough evaluation of the sporting results and prospects of the national team, the Executive Committee deemed it necessary to initiate this procedure in the best interests of Senegalese football.” ‎‎

The federation also confirmed that FSF president Abdoulaye Fall will address the media to further explain the decision and outline the future direction of the team.‎‎

Thiaw, a former Senegal international, had earlier led the team to AFCON glory in January, though the triumph was marred by controversy. In the final against Morocco, he dramatically led his players off the pitch after a stoppage-time penalty was awarded to the opposition, causing a 17-minute delay. ‎‎Although the penalty was ultimately saved and Senegal secured victory through Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner, the result was later overturned two months after by an appeals committee, awarding Morocco the title.
