Manchester United Academy Prodigy JJ Gabriel Asks to Leave Club

The 15-year-old winger has formally requested the cancellation of his registration as Manchester United look to resolve the situation.

Manchester United’s highly-rated academy prodigy JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club, with the teenager and his representatives understood to have formally notified the club hierarchy of their desire to cancel his registration with immediate effect.

The request, if approved, would allow Gabriel to become a free agent.

Questions had already emerged over the teenager’s future after he removed Manchester United-related content from his Instagram account several days ago, prompting speculation about his situation at the club.

Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel, popularly known as JJ Gabriel, was born in London and joined Manchester United at the age of 11. He has since developed into one of the most highly regarded young players to emerge from the club’s academy.

Gabriel enjoyed a particularly impressive 2025/26 campaign, scoring 23 goals for United’s Under-18s and becoming the youngest recipient of the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

His rapid development also saw him given an opportunity to experience senior football. Gabriel made his first-team appearance for United when he replaced Bryan Mbeumo during a pre-season fixture against Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United Surprised by the News

Gabriel’s request has reportedly come as a major surprise to those at Manchester United, with figures at Carrington understood to be mystified by the reasons behind the teenager’s decision.

The youngster had been involved in Michael Carrick’s first-team plans during pre-season and was expected to continue his involvement with the senior squad.

He had also been expected to be available for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton at Old Trafford. However, Gabriel will not be included in the squad for the fixture as the club attempts to understand and resolve the situation surrounding his future.

The Situation on Ground

Despite the seriousness of Gabriel’s request, the situation is not considered irretrievable, with Manchester United hopeful that an agreement can still be reached given the circumstances and the amount of time available.

The club also cannot simply deregister the youngster without following the relevant process.

According to Sky Sports, Premier League regulations state that a youth registration can only be cancelled when the club, player and the player’s parent or carer agree. If the parties cannot reach an agreement, the Premier League can ultimately make a binding decision.

Gabriel will turn 16 on October 6, meaning he cannot sign a scholarship agreement before his birthday. He will also have to wait until he turns 17 before he can sign a professional contract.

The uncertainty surrounding his future has inevitably attracted interest from elsewhere. Several clubs in England and across Europe are understood to be monitoring the situation, with Manchester City, Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid among the clubs reportedly open to signing the highly-rated winger.

For Manchester United, the priority will now be finding a resolution that protects both the club’s interests and Gabriel’s development as one of the most promising young talents in their academy.
