The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has reached an agreement with head coach Luis de la Fuente over a new contract that will keep him in charge of the national team until 2032.
The 65-year-old’s previous agreement was due to expire after Euro 2028, but the RFEF has now extended his stay by four years following his remarkable success with La Roja.
De la Fuente was appointed Spain’s senior head coach in December 2022, replacing Luis Enrique after Spain’s exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Before taking charge of the senior side, he spent almost a decade working within Spain’s youth setup, including spells with the Under-19 and Under-21 teams.
His promotion to the senior role has since produced a highly successful period for Spanish football.
De la Fuente led Spain to victory in the 2023 UEFA Nations League before adding the Euro 2024 title. His latest achievement came in July 2026, when Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final to claim their second World Cup crown.
Building Spain’s New Era
The remarkable run of success has strengthened the federation’s confidence in De la Fuente and secured his long-term future with the national team.
The new agreement means he will remain in charge through Euro 2028, the 2030 World Cup—which will be partly hosted by Spain—and Euro 2032.
RFEF president Rafael Louzán confirmed the agreement at the World Football Summit, highlighting the coach’s achievements and announcing improved financial terms as part of the new arrangement.
With De la Fuente now secured beyond the next major international tournaments, Spain can continue its preparations under the coach who has transformed the national team into the current world champions.
Nations League Challenge Awaits
De la Fuente will now turn his attention to Spain’s next challenge, with the coach scheduled to announce his squad for the UEFA Nations League on Friday, September 18.
Spain have been drawn alongside England, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Their campaign begins against England at Wembley on September 26, before home fixtures against Croatia and the Czech Republic.
For De la Fuente, the new contract provides continuity as Spain attempt to build on their extraordinary run of success and defend their status as world champions.
