Leave or Stay? England Decides on Thomas Tuchel’s Future Following World Cup Exit

England manager Thomas Tuchel has come under intense scrutiny following the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, where they surrendered a second-half lead to the defending champions.

‎Tuchel’s tactical decisions—particularly his defensive substitutions after Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute opener—have been heavily criticised. Argentina mounted a late comeback through goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, sealing their place in a second consecutive World Cup final. Sky Sports pundit Gary O’Hara was among the critics, suggesting Tuchel should “get sacked” over the costly changes that shifted momentum in Argentina’s favour.

‎Despite the backlash, Tuchel stood firm on his decisions, insisting he had “no regrets” over the substitutions, while admitting that England became “too passive” in the latter stages of the match, ultimately contributing to their downfall.

‎Nonetheless, the English FA has backed Tuchel, confirming his position as national team coach remains secure through to 2028, with the German set to lead England into the 2028 European Championship.
