David Alaba Set for Shock Udinese Move After Real Madrid Exit

David Alaba is set to continue his career in Serie A after agreeing a one-year contract with Udinese until June 2027, following his departure from Real Madrid.

The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich defender has arrived in Italy and completed his medical in Udine ahead of the move to the Stadio Friuli , with the transfer coming as a free-agent signing.

The decision represents an unexpected turn in the career of the Austrian veteran, particularly after several seasons disrupted by persistent injury problems. Knee issues have repeatedly restricted Alaba’s involvement at Real Madrid, although his participation in Austria’s 2026 World Cup campaign offered an indication that he could be moving towards a more stable period physically.

The move to Udinese therefore gives the 34-year-old an opportunity to rebuild his career in a new environment while bringing considerable experience to a Serie A side that currently has a pressing need for defensive leadership.

What Alaba’s Arrival Means for Udinese’s Defence

Udinese’s decision to bring in Alaba comes at a particularly important moment for Kosta Runjaic’s team.

Oumar Solet, one of the key figures in the defence, has recently suffered an injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks. Udinese have also lost Thomas Kristensen to Atalanta, leaving the club without two important options at the heart of their backline.

Alaba’s arrival could therefore provide more than just additional defensive depth. His experience at the highest level of European football could help restore some stability to a backline that has lost important figures.

For Alaba, meanwhile, the role could suit the stage of his career. Rather than simply competing for a place, he could become one of Udinese’s defensive leaders while helping younger players develop around him.

Alaba to Miss Austria’s Nations League Fixtures

Despite his new club move, Alaba will not immediately be involved with Austria during the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Austria face Israel on September 24 before meeting Kosovo three days later on September 27. Head coach Ralf Rangnick has left Alaba out of the squad as part of a post-World Cup transition and wider rebuilding process.

That means Alaba’s immediate focus will be on settling at Udinese and returning to club football after his injury struggles, as he begins another chapter of his distinguished career in Italy.
