Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg by mutual agreement, bringing his short spell with the German club to an early end, the Saxony based outfit can announce.
The 34-year-old had been contracted to Wolfsburg until June 30, 2027, but the two parties have agreed to terminate the deal with immediate effect.
Eriksen joined the club as a free agent in September 2025 and made 34 appearances across all competitions last season, registering three goals and 10 assists.
The Incident That Changed Everything
Eriksen’s departure comes three months after he collapsed during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on June 7.
The midfielder went down in the 65th minute after clutching his chest, prompting the match to be abandoned. His implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), which was fitted following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2021, detected an abnormal heart rhythm and delivered a corrective shock.
Eriksen was conscious afterwards and was able to leave the pitch before being taken to hospital for further assessment.
Wolfsburg subsequently announced that Eriksen would undergo an individual rehabilitation programme in Denmark. The club maintained contact with the midfielder and the medical team overseeing his recovery.
Eriksen’s Decision to Leave Wolfsburg
Announcing the termination on the club’s official site, Wolfsburg managing director of sport Dieter Hecking said the decision over Eriksen’s future had been left to the player.“It was clear to us that the decision about his future lay with Christian. We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now granted his request to terminate his contract.”
Eriksen also explained his reasoning, saying: “Right now, it’s important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I’m happy that we were able to find a solution together.”
He added that his time at Wolfsburg had been marked by “many highs and lows” and thanked everyone at the club for their support.
A Distinguished Career Continues in Uncertainty
Eriksen’s departure closes another chapter in a remarkable career. Before moving to Wolfsburg, he played for Tottenham, Inter Milan, Brentford and Manchester United, making more than 300 Premier League appearances.
His career was dramatically interrupted in 2021 when he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland.
After being fitted with an ICD, he eventually returned to professional football with Brentford before later joining Manchester United.
Now, with his immediate priority being to remain close to his family in Denmark, Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg after just one season, with his next step in football yet to be determined.
