Manchester City have completed the signing of Northern Ireland goalkeeper, Pierce Charles, from Sheffield Wednesday, securing the 20-year-old on a five-year deal which will run until the summer of 2031.
City splashed in 3 million to secure the signing the goalkeeper, a figure that could sky up to £10 million when add-ons are considered.
Charles will immediately join Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan for the 2026/27 campaign, as part of his development.
Speaking on the move, the young goalkeeper described it as the perfect step, emphasizing his desire for regular game time at Championship level.
His temporary exit also comes amid uncertainty in City’s goalkeeping ranks. Second-choice James Trafford is pushing for a move away in search of more playing time, with clubs like Tottenham and Newcastle already showing interest for his service. Conversely, third-choice Marcus Bettinelli could depart upon the expiry of his contract in 2027, having just signed a one-year contract extension in April.
Born in England to a Northern Irish mother and English father, Charles represents Northern Ireland internationally.He began his development at Manchester City’s academy before joining Sheffield Wednesday in 2021. He has progressed through every youth level for Northern Ireland and has earned 12 senior caps, making his debut in a 0-0 UEFA Nations League draw against Belarus back in October 2024.
During his time at Sheffield Wednesday, Charles made his debut in an FA Cup tie against Coventry City in 2024 and later claimed the number one spot ahead of the 2025/26 season. He went on to bag 21 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his potential before earning his move back to Manchester City.
