Morocco have been dealt a major setback ahead of their crucial World Cup quarterfinal clash against France on Thursday, with forward Ismael Saibari ruled out through injury.
The 25-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during Morocco’s 3-0 victory over Canada in the round of 16, forcing him off in the 22nd minute. He was subsequently replaced by Soufiane Rahimi.
Latest updates from Morocco’s medical team confirm Saibari has not recovered in time for the France encounter, though he could return for the semifinals if the Atlas Lions progress.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi confirmed this news, stating:
“Everyone is 100 percent fit except Saibari. This game comes too soon for him, but I hope he is not out for the rest of the competition. He’s not ready, but I hope it’s not the end of the tournament for him.”
Rahimi made an immediate impact after replacing Saibari, scoring Morocco’s third goal against Canada to help secure qualification to the quarterfinals.
Saibari has been one of Morocco’s standout performers at this tournament, scoring in all three group-stage matches and converting a decisive penalty in the last-32 shootout win over the Netherlands. He is currently the team’s highest goal scorer in the tournament.
The attacking midfielder recently completed a €50 million move to Bayern Munich from PSV Eindhoven, where he had developed since 2020.
Morocco now face the daunting challenge of taking on France, as they aim to avenge their 2-0 semifinal defeat to the same opponents at the 2022 World Cup and continue their historic run in the competition.
