Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot is edging closer to a return to management, with the Dutchman now in pole position to become the head coach of the Netherlands national team.
The 45-year-old has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Ronald Koeman following the Oranje’s World Cup exit at the last-32 stage against Morocco.
According to reports, the Dutch FA are keen to appoint a permanent manager swiftly ahead of an important UEFA Nations League clash against Germany, and Slot is expected to take charge in time for that fixture.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR LIVERPOOL
Liverpool are set to benefit financially from Slot’s potential appointment. After parting ways with him in May, the club had been paying his monthly salary, but have now agreed a revised arrangement.
According to reports, Liverpool will ‘top up’ Slot’s wages during his first year with the Netherlands to match what he would have earned at Anfield, a move that ultimately saves the club millions compared to a full compensation payout. Slot had earned just under £7 million in his debut season as Liverpool manager, with bonuses increasing that figure.
Arne Slot joined Liverpool on May 20, 2024, replacing Jürgen Klopp and signing a three-year deal. During his time at Anfield, he led the club to a Premier League triumph before being dismissed in May, bringing his tenure to an early end as manager of the Reds.
