Alexander Isak has been forced to leave Sweden’s international camp after suffering a toe injury during the 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory over Romania on Friday.
The Liverpool forward played the full 90 minutes at the Strawberry Arena but was left hobbling after a heavy stamp during the second half.
The incident involved Romanian defender Radu Drăgușin and left Isak with a bloody toe. Sweden subsequently confirmed that their No.9 would miss the remainder of the international window, while Liverpool are expected to assess the injury after his return to Merseyside.

Liverpool Await Isak’s Assessment
Despite the alarming appearance of the injury, the initial indications have been relatively positive. Swedish officials described the problem as “minor”, while Isak himself played down the seriousness of the incident after the match.
The fact that it is an impact injury rather than an apparent muscle problem could also provide encouragement for Liverpool.
“Those of you who have played might know that it takes a few minutes for the pain to subside, but it was O.K.,” Isak reported. The timing could also work in Liverpool’s favour. Isak now has around two weeks to recover before Arne Slot’s side return to Premier League action against Manchester City on Sunday, October 11.
The injury comes at an important point in the striker’s Liverpool career. Having struggled to consistently make an impact during his first season at Anfield, Isak had begun the new campaign with greater attacking output and has already surpassed his Premier League goal tally from last season.
From One-to-Watch at Newcastle to Record Signing for Liverpool

Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United on September 1, 2025, in a British-record £125 million transfer. The move followed an impressive spell on Tyneside, where the Swedish striker established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous forwards.
However, his first season on Merseyside failed to produce the impact expected from such an expensive signing. Isak made a hand few as 14 Premier League appearances during the 2025/26 campaign, scoring three goals and providing one assist.
The 2026/27 season has offered a more encouraging start. Isak has scored four goals and provided one assist in seven appearances across all competitions for Liverpool, showing signs of becoming a more influential figure in the attack.
His form has also continued at international level. Isak opened the scoring against Romania in the 20th minute, but his night was overshadowed by the toe injury that eventually forced him out of Sweden’s remaining fixtures.
For Liverpool, the priority is now ensuring the problem does not develop into a longer absence. With Manchester City next on the Premier League schedule, Isak’s availability could become an important storyline when the Reds return from the international break.
