Former Germany and Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is set to begin a new chapter in his football career after reaching a principle agreement to join Trabzonspor as assistant coach.
Jerome Boateng is reportedly on the verge of joining Turkish side Trabzonspor as assistant coach to Thomas Reis, marking his first coaching role at senior professional level.
The 2014 World Cup winner has already gained experience on the touchline, but his proposed move to the Black Sea club represents a significant step into professional coaching.
The 38-year-old is expected to travel to Trabzon to complete the formalities and sign his contract, having agreed in principle to work alongside Reis.
Trabzonspor Turn to Boateng
Boateng’s arrival comes as Trabzonspor attempt to rebuild after a difficult opening to the season, which included an early exit from Europa League qualifying against Ferencvaros.
The club subsequently parted company with Fatih Tekke and appointed German coach Thomas Reis. Reis immediately provided a response on the pitch, guiding Trabzonspor to a remarkable 4-0 victory over reigning champions Galatasaray in his first league match in charge.
Mohamed Salah was the standout performer, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist as Trabzonspor produced one of their most emphatic victories of the campaign.
Boateng is now set to become part of Reis’ coaching staff as the club look to build on that impressive beginning and improve their fortunes domestically.
From World Cup Winner to the Touchline
Boateng brings considerable experience from a playing career that included some of Europe’s biggest clubs. The former Germany international, who earned 76 caps for his country, spent a decade at Bayern Munich between 2011 and 2021, winning numerous domestic and European honours while establishing himself as one of Germany’s leading defenders.
He later played for Lyon, Salernitana and LASK, with his final playing chapter coming in Austria. Boateng joined LASK in May 2024 after leaving Salernitana and made appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga and UEFA Conference League.
His transition into coaching began in April 2025, when he joined LASK Amateure OÖ as assistant to Andreas Wieland. He worked with the reserve side for 13 matches before leaving the position in August, subsequently bringing his playing career to an end in September 2025. He holds a UEFA B coaching licence.
Trabzonspor will now provide Boateng with his first opportunity to work within a senior professional coaching environment.
