Todd Boehly Steps Down as Chelsea Chairman After Clearlake Takes Full Control

American businessman leaves his role as chairman as Clearlake Capital assumes full ownership of Chelsea.

Chelsea have confirmed that Todd Boehly has stepped down as chairman after Clearlake Capital completed the acquisition of full ownership of the Premier League club.

The announcement, made late on Wednesday, confirmed that affiliates of Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. have acquired Boehly’s ownership interest, bringing an end to his four-year spell as chairman.

The club also confirmed that Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group, while Clearlake has also acquired Mark Walter’s ownership interest to assume full control of Chelsea.

Despite the ownership restructuring, Chelsea stressed that there will be no changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or long-term strategy.

End of an Era

Boehly and Clearlake jointly led Chelsea’s historic takeover in 2022, completing the purchase during a period of unprecedented uncertainty surrounding the club.

Reflecting on his departure, Boehly thanked everyone associated with Chelsea and expressed confidence in the club’s future.

“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the Club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans. I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the Club. I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership.”

Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano also paid tribute to Boehly’s contribution.

“Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as Chairman. He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family. Clearlake has served as Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the Club’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the Club’s supporters.”

Boehly’s Time at Chelsea

Boehly’s tenure was marked by significant investment and major changes on and off the pitch.

During his four years as chairman, Chelsea endured one of the most turbulent periods in the club’s modern history. The Blues suffered a 12th-place Premier League finish—their lowest in decades.

Despite those setbacks, the ownership group continued to invest heavily in the squad, infrastructure and long-term sporting project.

With Clearlake Capital now assuming full control, Chelsea enter a new chapter, hoping greater stability in the boardroom will translate into sustained success both domestically and in European competition.
