‎Pato-Backed Consortium Closes in on Northampton Town Takeover

‎A consortium involving former Brazil, AC Milan and Chelsea striker Alexandre Pato is reportedly close to completing the acquisition of English League Two club Northampton Town after receiving regulatory clearance to proceed with the proposed takeover.

‎Pato is an investor in Sports Alpha Capital, described as “a football-focused investment group” with “a strong connection between Brazil and the UK.” The consortium has now successfully navigated the approval processes required by both the English Football League (EFL) and the Independent Football Regulator (IFR), clearing a significant hurdle towards completing the investment.

‎Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas welcomed the progress and stressed the level of scrutiny involved in the process. He said:

‎”As one of the first football clubs to be considered under the new regulatory framework, the proposed investors have been required to successfully navigate both the EFL clearance and IFR approval processes.

‎”This has been a detailed and rigorous process, involving significant scrutiny of the proposed investment, the ownership structure, financial sustainability, and the suitability and financial standing of those involved.

‎”The successful completion of both the IFR and EFL processes represents an important milestone for the club and should provide supporters and stakeholders with further confidence in the proposed investment and the foundations being put in place for the club’s future.

‎”We would like to thank both the EFL and the IFR for their professionalism, diligence and thoroughness throughout their respective processes.

‎”During this time, we have also enjoyed getting to know the investors and principals behind Sports Alpha Capital and are excited about what they can bring to Northampton Town.

‎”As supporters will see from their varied backgrounds, there is a genuine passion for football within the group. A number of the investors have already visited Northampton, spent time at the club and attended matches.

‎”They will bring a strong blend of football, corporate and financial expertise to the club and with significant Brazilian representation within the group we also hope they might bring a little Brazilian excitement and flair with them.

‎”Now the regulatory processes have been completed we move towards completing the remaining documentation and finalising the investment. Full details regarding the investment, structure and the principal investors involved will be announced upon completion.

‎”We thank the fans for their patience, but it is reassuring that these in-depth processes are in place for football.”

‎Pato’s Playing Career

‎

Pato at AC Milan

‎Pato, whose full name is Alexandre Rodrigues da Silva, enjoyed the most prominent period of his playing career at AC Milan. The Brazilian spent almost six years with the Italian giants, scoring 63 goals and helping the club win the Serie A title during the 2010/11

‎His career also included a short spell in the Premier League with Chelsea. Pato joined the London club on loan in 2016 and scored on his Chelsea debut, although his opportunities were limited to just two Premier League appearances.

‎Pato later returned to Brazil and spent time with São Paulo. In January 2025, he confirmed his retirement from professional football after stepping away from the club, although he had not played a competitive match since 2023.

‎Now, the former striker is set to embark on a different chapter of his football journey, potentially helping to shape the future of Northampton Town from the boardroom rather than the pitch.

‎With the EFL and IFR processes completed, the remaining documentation must now be finalised before the investment is officially concluded. Further details about the ownership structure and the principal investors are expected to be announced once the transaction is completed.
