Chelsea Exploring Loan Move for Mudryk

Chelsea are exploring a potential loan move for Mykhailo Mudryk as the Ukrainian winger prepares to rebuild his fitness and regain regular competitive football following a lengthy absence.

Mudryk has reportedly agreed to leave Chelsea on loan before the September 1 transfer deadline, with the club considering several possible destinations.

A move to sister club Strasbourg has been proposed, although the 25-year-old is understood to prefer remaining in the Premier League. Several other clubs have also shown interest, while a number of leading sides in Italy have emerged as potential options for the winger.

The Ban from Football

Mudryk’s prolonged absence from competitive football stems from a doping case that began in late 2024. The Chelsea winger was provisionally suspended by the English Football Association in December 2024 after failing a drug test for meldonium.

Following an independent commission, he was handed a four-year ban in January 2026.

Mudryk maintained that his sample had been contaminated while he was on international duty with Ukraine in October 2024, and strongly denied deliberately taking any prohibited substance, making his position clear at the time.

In a statement released during the case, Mudryk described the failed test as “a complete shock”, adding that he had “not done anything wrong”. The winger subsequently appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on February 25 after receiving the four-year suspension from the FA.

Chelsea also launched their own investigation after the FA began its proceedings. The club said Mudryk had insisted that he “has never knowingly used any banned substances”.

The situation was eventually resolved in July 2026, when changes to WADA guidelines resulted in the ban being shortened, allowing Mudryk to return to football immediately.

His return, however, presents a different challenge. After such a long period away from competitive action, the priority for both the player and Chelsea is now to restore his fitness, rhythm and confidence.

A loan move could therefore provide Mudryk with the consistent playing time needed to rebuild his career away from the intense pressure of Stamford Bridge.

At Chelsea

Chelsea signed Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88 million in January 2023, handing him an eight-year contract that keeps him at Stamford Bridge until 2031.

Despite the significant investment made in him, Mudryk has struggled to establish himself as a consistent first-choice player in Chelsea’s attack. Since arriving in west London, he has recorded 10 goals and 11 assists in 73 appearances.

His development was then interrupted dramatically by the doping case.

Mudryk has not played a competitive match since November 2024, meaning his return to normal football will require patience as he readjusts to the demands of regular competition.

Following the resolution of his case, however, the Ukrainian was able to begin rebuilding his fitness with Chelsea. He featured from the bench in pre-season friendlies against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta’zim during the club’s tour of Asia.

Those appearances represented an important first step, but Chelsea now appear to believe that regular competitive football is the next stage of his rehabilitation.

Why a Loan Move Makes Sense For Chelsea

Sending Mudryk out on loan could provide an opportunity for the winger to play consistently without placing immediate pressure on him to deliver at the highest level.

For Mudryk, meanwhile, the move could be even more important. After almost two years away from competitive football, what he needs most is playing time. Training alone cannot fully replicate the intensity, decision-making and physical demands of competitive matches.

His preference for another Premier League club is understandable. Remaining in England would allow him to continue playing in a familiar environment while testing himself against some of the world’s best defenders.

A move to Italy could offer an alternative route, particularly if a club there can guarantee him regular minutes.

Ultimately, Mudryk’s next move will be about far more than simply finding a new club. It will be about rebuilding a career that was dramatically interrupted and proving that he can once again become the dynamic attacking player Chelsea invested heavily in back in 2023.
