Aston Villa have beaten Newcastle United to the signing of highly rated young Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, with the club now finalising a deal to bring him in from Freiburg.
According to transfer expert David Ornstein, Newcastle United had initially been in pole position to secure Manzambi’s signature, having reached a club-to-club agreement with Freiburg for a fee reported around £51.5 million. Club executives even travelled to Germany to finalise the move, and the deal appeared close.
However, delays arose as the player remained undecided on his preferred destination, casting doubt on the transfer despite Newcastle’s strong push.At the final stages, Manzambi rejected Newcastle’s offer, opting instead for their Premier League opponents Aston Villa. Key factors behind his decision included stronger alignment with Villa’s long-term project and majorly the appeal of playing Champions League football next season.
Per Ornstein, Villa had intensified their pursuit following Amadou Onana’s injury, moving swiftly to agree a deal worth around £60 million within days and convincing the player of his role in their plans at Villa Park.
On the international stage, Manzambi has also been making headlines. The 20 year old Freiburg midfielder impressed during Switzerland’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals. He marked his debut on the global stage, and became the youngest Swiss player to feature at the tournament
